Italy’s First Pet and Human Cemetery Planned near Pisa, Tuscany

The little hilltown area of Fauglia near Pisa has just announced it is looking into creating the first mixed pet and human cemetery in Italy.

Although still in its very early stages and looking for funding, the Comune is very serious about the project and believed there will be a strong demand from owners who wish to be laid to rest with their faithful animal companions.

Land is certainly not an issue as the Comune has seven hectares available which has been donated by a local citizen.

Personally, I think it’s a wonderful idea. What do you think?

  1. I live near the oldest pet cemetery in the U.S.
Btw, I read an article today saying euthanasia of dogs and cats is illegal in Italy. Is this true? I’d like to write about it perhaps interview you for my blog on differences of attitude and legal policies towards pets in Italy and the U.S. Feel free to email me.

  2. Gorgeous proposal! I just hope it doesn’t get weighed down by red tape…
Hope all well with you and your furry family xxx

  3. I think I remember reading the mayor who proposed the scheme is a practising Catholic and is well aware of the potential for controversy, but you may well be right Pami and the church may block it, which would be a shame.

  4. It’s a lovely idea – and it surprises me that Italy is the one to do it (what with the Catholic faith etc.). There has been one such “facility” in Cornwall/UK for years now. However, I would like to suggest the term “guardian” being used here, and not “owner”. Nobody can own another living being. That notion is for those who see animals as property – to be bred, used and killed at will and whim.

  5. Think it’s a great idea but can’t help feeling the Church may not be so enthusiastic!
We have unofficial Pet Cemetery near us which is very well kept by those with pets buried there.
