To free up some space on the adoption page I am adding this page. These dogs have been waiting the longest so please don't forget about them!
ABRUZZO
Sinbad
is a victim of the recent Abruzzo earthquake. He is a Maremma sheepdog,
four years old, very friendly and good with other dogs. He is currently
being cared for at the Paganica Refuge being run by the Canine Defence
League of Aquila (Lega Nazionale per la Difesa del Cane sezione di
L'Aquila). They are over-run with pets that have been made homeless as
a result of the catastrophe, so if you can help home even one it would
make their lives that bit easier.

ROME
The story of Setter
is a heartbreaking one that is sadly very typical. He was just six
months old when he was thrown over the wall of the pound in Rome
province and into a cage of adult dogs. He’d probably grown too big too
fast and his owner thought he’d cost too much to keep. He crawled under
the kennel of one of the dogs to escape and was found there by chance
cold, hungry and exhausted by fear.
And there, in that cage, he
has remained for eight long years, one of Italy’s many forgotten dogs,
in a kennel that nobody ever visits and from which the only way out if
usually in a black bin liner, the normal way of disposing of these poor
creatures at the end of their desperate lives.
Can
you help give Setter his life back? To help his dreams of a home and a
family come true? He’s too beautiful and brave a dog to spend the rest
of his days in a cage. He’s still got some good years ahead of him and
he would repay you a million times over.
He’s
about 30 - 35 kilos, has been sterilized and gets on well with dogs of
both sexes, he has a sweet, gentle character and is never aggressive,
he could even be trusted with children and would be fine in an
apartment or in a house with garden. He’s in good health and he is even
a canine blood donor! How could you let a lovely dog like that live in
the cold and loneliness of a cage? Don’t make him continue to pay for
the cowardly and despicable behaviour of his owner, give him another
chance, he truly deserves to finally know what it is like to be loved
and cared for.
If
you can help him we will bring him to you anywhere in central and north
Italy for adoption which will be supervised seriously.

PIEMONTE
Teo
is an older Italian hound cross who has been caged at the Turin pound
for eight years. The hunter who bred him thought he was too friendly and
therefore unsuitable to be a hunting dog so he took him to a pound and
left him there. Hunting dogs are among the most common residents in dog
pounds which is ironic considering they are only there because they are
so friendly and don't want to catch prey. For the past eight years Teo
has tried to find a home, with no luck. Every time he sees someone he
throws himself desperately against the bars of the cage in the hope
that he might be let out for a little while, which unfortunately only
happens once a week. This scene is repeated several times a day, every
day. Teo never gives up hope.
Teo is neutered and healthy and is still waiting for the day he can be part of a family.
BRESCIA
Tarzan
is a very happy-go-lucky dog who has been a recluse at the dog pound in
Brescia since 1999, coming out of his dark cage for just 20 minutes a
weekends only.
Lack of fresh air, stimuli and interaction have meant Tarzan's life has
been a wasted one and he is looking to spend his remaining years with a
family so he can finally show what a good-natured dog he is, which is
obvious from the photo. Tarzan looks like a much younger dog and is
friendly and calm. Recently, however, volunteers at the pound have
noticed he has started to be scared and submissive which is very out of
character and it is for this reason that they are renewing their appeal
for a home for him. He can be adopted anywhere in north or central
Italy. Phone number and email below under Gennaro entry.
ROME
Rex
is a ten-year-old (estimated) German Shepherd living alone in the
streets of Rome. He only survives thanks to a local shopkeeper who
feeds him and lets him sleep in his shop on cold nights, while he
shelters under a public stairway every other night of the year.
Rex is
a sensitive soul, and good with people, but also scared and submissive,
probably due to past mistreatment which happened while living alone in
the streets at the mercy of thugs. His eyes are very sad, marked by his
abandonment two years ago, after years spent with a family that he
believed loved him. Rex urgently needs to find a safe haven and to find the family love he so sorely misses.

Papera (duckling) has the eyes, attitude and expression of a puppy, despite being being around five years old. She weights around 15-20 kg., and her character is EXTREMELY SWEET! Her eyes beg for protection and love.
Papera’s legs
are deformed, it could have been an accident, illness, a genetic
malformation, or the struggle for survival that she had to endure since
a pup. For the first five years of her life, she was forced to live in
a horrific Molise pound where several dogs were kept in one cage
exposed to the elements, forced to fight over the little food thrown to
them on occasions. She can walk just fine, just a bit slower and with
less agility than a dog her age.
Papera is now in
Rome, where following blood tests she has been diagnosed with
leishmaniosis, a condition transmitted ONLY through a
nocturnal mosquito bite, and not by direct contact between animals or
human/animal. She is now undergoing veterinary treatment and further
tests, but the volunteers in charge of her care haven’t given up hope
of finding her a loving home, it would be the first she has ever had.

BRESCIA
Brick
is an eight-year-old mixed breed small to medium size, micro chipped
and vaccinated. He’s friendly but a bit perplexed by people, not being
used to getting ANY form of attention whatsoever for the last eight
years, other than a bowl of food shoved into his barren cage daily.
As you
can see from his picture, he’s curious and responsive towards new
situations (like a camera pointing at him for the first time in his
life!) and he could therefore be easily socialised and worked with to
become the perfect family dog. As with any dog with his kind of
background, he’ll need a little time to adjust to having a home and
attention, but the fact that he isn’t terrified but just puzzled, is a
very good starting point.
He’s already started to
go out for walks with the volunteers who took this picture, and he has
not shown any problems. The volunteers say he gets along with other
dogs, including males like him. Volunteers have only recently been
allowed to take pictures of the dogs in this private dog pound in the
Brescia province of northern Italy
, and to take them out for short walks. The only way for these unfortunate, forgotten animals ever to leave their prison alive is this picture, circulated through the internet.

He has been inside the dark, barren cage that you see in the picture HIS WHOLE LIFE,
unsurprisingly, many of the 50 dogs kept here are unsocialised and
terrified of humans, but not sweet Matus, who is always glad to see the
volunteers. Matusalemme
(Methuselah) - Matus for short! - is a large, very friendly
14-years-young dog and as far as the volunteers who take him for a
short walk once weekly can tell, he pays no attention to other dogs,
showing no aggression towards them.
The
pound owner sees these dogs as a source of income, as the Government
pays a few euros a day for each dog’s upkeep, and he’s not worried at
all about their well-being aside from mere survival, let alone their
socialisation or behavioural issues. They look healthy, and they are vaccinated and microchipped, or tattooed, as required by law.
For info contact the volunteers who visit the pound once weekly. They know each dog by name, so just mention Matusalemme:

NAPLES
Querida is a lovely little dog weighing just 3 kg and had she been healthy, she would have been adopted long ago.
She is
a loving, fragile and sensitive dog, but unfortunately she has never
known anything more than the barren dog pound cage and the love of the
volunteers who take care of her once weekly.
Three
years ago, Querida was diagnosed with a form of cancer to the nose, and
has received chemotherapy and a surgical reconstruction, but
unfortunately the cancer has not shown any signs of receding, and her
tiny nose has started to be slightly eaten away by her terrible
illness. The volunteers have now decided to stop the chemotherapy, as
the cancer seems to be incurable, and they are desperately trying to
give Querida a home, where she can spend whatever time she has left in
happiness she has never known so far.
Querida is now at the Fenice Refuge in Naples, but the volunteers are available to transport her anywhere in Italy
free of charge, to give her the chance of a loving home.
